There Geneva Library offers a new photo exhibition, in the Corridor of glances, on the factory Gardy.
The Gardy Factory
The company specializing in production of electrical equipment at La Jonction will be in operation until 1975 and will employ up to 800 people in the 1960s.
Commissioned by the management of the factory at the time, the images present an idyllic vision of work: the premises are tidy, the workers diligent and disciplined. On closer inspection, the Social reports and the hierarchies show through in certain images: the subordinate place of women in workshops and offices, the difference between blue-collar and white-collar universes, separated even during breaks, the relationship between staff and management.
The hanging
The attachment which is shown in Corridor of glances of the Geneva Library is the result of a collaboration between the Center d’iconographie and the College of Labor a foundation responsible for preserving and promoting the memory of the working world.
The images highlight an unknown part of Geneva’s heritage and make it possible to trace the history of this imposing building still installed in the heart of the Junction and which today welcomes the apprentices of the Construction Professional Training Center.
A conference on industrial work in the 20th century will take place on September 19at the Bastions, in the presence of specialists and former workers of the Gardy company.
